新撰和歌(しんせんわか)

新編国歌大観 II.3

This is a collection of 361 poems that Ki no Tsurayuki compiled based on an Imperial command from Daigo to collect the best poems from the Kokin wakashū. They are reorganized into pairs of poems and shorn of their prose contexts and author attributions. Despite the instruction, the collection contains some poems not included in the KKS. The collection may have been assembled in the 930s, and includes a Chinese preface. Helen McCullough's Brocade by Night has a chapter that treats this work in detail.
