Text

「歌たてまつれ」と仰せられし時によみてたてまつれる

(Ki no Tsurayuki)

桜花咲きにけらしもあしひきの山のかひより見ゆる白雲

sakurabana
saki-ni-kerashi mo
ashihiki no
yama no kai yori
miyuru shirakumo

The cherry blossoms
It seems to me have bloomed!
The foot-dragging mountain
Through the spaces in the peaks
White clouds are visible.

Notes

foot-dragging
ashihiki no is a pillow word for mountains, of uncertain meaning. Takeoka thinks that in this poem, the image of sleeves "dragging" is important to the scene.
