Analysis
Bubbles in the water was a common symbol of evanescence and transience, showing up in poetry as early as the Man'yōshū. This poem combines that image with the short-lived cherry blossoms. As Matsuda(1968) indicates, the rather "cold" logic of this poem is in stark contrast to the surrounding poems which are focused more on the human emotion in response to the falling flowers. Despite this, the poem does include a subtext of lamenting the falling of the flowers, and the prose preface lends an immediacy to the scene, allowing the reader to imagine the elegance of the petals drifting in the water of the palace.

Beyond this basic interpretation, a number of scholars have tried to link the poem's feeling to some real life event, such as the death of an Emperor. Many earlier commentators identified specific Crown Princes or Emperors that the poem applied to, but they are often much later than the life of Sugano no Takayo. Also, some of these attempts are predicated on an idea that any detail in the prose preface must have been included for an important reason relevant to the poem's interpretation, which may not have actually been the case.
;Progression of spring
:The exact meaning of haru no yukue is debated. The two most common opinions are represented by Takeoka and Katagiri. Takeoka's explanation is that being shut inside, she is not aware of the progression of spring through the various key points (blooming plums, scattering cherries, etc). Katagiri interprets it as the result or endpoint of spring.

Other sources:

* Kokin waka rokujō
* Teika hachidaishō

Analysis
This is another poem that has an extended prose preface showing the circumstances of the composition. There is a connection to the previous poem in that both involve barriers to experiencing the seasonal imagery.

Most commenters have noted the pathos and sorrow of the scene, and its close connection to the prose preface. Yoruka is unable to experience the spring because she is shut up indoors from illness, to the point where she cannot even feel the wind. The fourth line points to the cherry blossoms that she was waiting to see, but in the end was unable to.

The main point of difference is what the flower actually is. The majority opinion is that this is a flower in a vase, possibly given by a visitor. The withering of the flower suggests what might be happening in the outside world. Seigi and Kaneko(1927) say that she has opened her blinds a bit on a day when she feels better, although if she is seeing actual cherry trees that would not fit with the preface. Regardless, the single flower is reminding her of all the cherry tree-related activities she could be participating in if she were not ill.

Takeoka seems to be the only commenter who connects the poem's expression to Yoruka's own declining health, although Tō no Tsunenori may be hinting at this in Ryōdō kikigaki. Even hiding from the wind did not protect this blossom (which are usually scattered by the wind); in the same way she will not be able to escape her own fate.
The pages for each poem of the Kokin wakashū are named "KKS [poem number]" (for instance, KKS 35). The poem numbers are taken from the Shimpen Kokka Taikan (the numbers are the same in the original Kokka Taikan). The SKT does not give any of the poems from alternate manuscripts, but I have numbered them consecutively from the end of the main poems, following the SKT's treatment of variant poems for other poetry collections.
Analysis
This is another poem that has an extended prose preface showing the circumstances of the composition. There is a connection to the previous poem in that both involve barriers to experiencing the seasonal imagery.

Most commenters have noted the pathos and sorrow of the scene: Yoruka is unable to experience the spring because she is shut up indoors from illness, to the point where she cannot even feel the wind. The fourth line points to the cherry blossoms that she was waiting to see, but in the end was unable to.
新編国歌大観 X.177
This is an extensive list of roughly 1800 poems drawn from the first eight Imperial anthologies, presumably intended to be a selection of the best poems from each source. The work is divided into 20 volumes that generally follow the division of the Imperial collections, and the arrangement of the poems within the volumes seems to also generally follow the progress of the seasons and other standard organizational principles, although Teika freely reorders the poems within groups. The numbers in parentheses are numbers within the Hachidaishō.
Roughly a quarter of the poems are from the Man'yōshū, and many others appear in the first three Imperial collections (especially the KKS and GSS). It was perhaps compiled in the latter half of the 10th century, but the compiler or compilers are unknown, and its relationship to the Imperial collections and other private collections is also debated. The Shinpen kokka taikan version contains 4494 poems with 5 additional poems from alternate texts.

In the list below, the categories are ordered as they are in the Shinpen kokka taikan text, but the poems listed are simply given in Imperial collection order, which does not match their order in the Rokujō.
Analysis
The previous poem mentioned a single glimpse of the flowers, but here even that single glimpse is denied to the poet (Chokudenkai).

As usual there are a variety of explanations as to the exact situation of the poet. Takanao (Shinshaku), Matsuda(1960), and Katagiri both say that the poet has been unable to see the flowers throughout the season, but wanted to at least see their scattering. Miura(1943) instead says that the poet has been watching the flowers throughout the season, waiting to see them scatter, but at that important point is denied. Regardless, the da ni "even" particles show the poet's discontent, and the personification of the haze fits in with similar techniques in surrounding poems.

Many manuscripts attribute this poem to Kiyohara no Fukayabu. The Kokin waka rokujō also has that authorship, and it is included in the Fukayabu collection as well. Shunzei and Teika's manuscripts are the ones that lack the name, making this another poem of Tsurayuki's. There is no way to tell whether this was intentional change based on some evidence, or an accidental copying mistake.

;someone he knew
:The phrasing is used in love poetry to mean someone who the poet had a romantic relationship with. However, here it probably just means a friend -- it would be unusual for the woman to visit the man.

;attached to a flower
:This was a common practice in the period for all kinds of letters and poems.

Analysis
This is an example of a "private" poem, relatively uncommon in the KKS. Commentators differ on exactly what the message is supposed to communicate to the addressee, however.

There is general agreement that this is inviting the addressee to come back, expressing this wish indirectly through the request that the flowers wait just one more day. Kubota(1937) sees the poem as angry, and thinks the addressee would have felt chastened. This seems to be a minority view though, with most other commenters seeing it as a more elegant invitation. There are differences on small details, like whether the flower sent with the letter is showing signs of fading, or whether the message is sent right after the person leaves or later. But on the whole the expression seems clear.

Katagiri thinks that the wording of the prose preface and the expression of the poem are meant to suggest a romantic affair, with Tsurayuki taking the post of the "flower" (the woman) waiting for a man to return who she has only "seen" (i.e. had sex with) once. Such a pose would not be unusual for Tsurayuki, and other such homosocial poetry exchanges between men can be found throughout the Heian period.
List of textual differences
This is a list of the textual differences between the base text and the three texts that are most commonly used in modern editions. 伊、貞、嘉 refer to the three texts. 定 means that all three of them read this way. 諸 means that not only the Teika texts, but all (or nearly all) manuscripts even outside the Teika texts read this way.

If there is a ＊ after the poem number, that means that the base text was emended in the translation. This has only been done in cases where it seems probable that the base text is in error, and where the change materially affects the translation.

Notes
;scatter
:There is some disagreement on exactly what "scatter" means applied to the poet -- the main theories are "die", "retreat from the world", or "leave Urin'in temple." See the Analysis section for how these ideas affect the overall reading of the poem.

Other sources:

* Kokin waka rokujō

Analysis
Similar in expression to poem 71, this poem contrasts the longevity of humans vs. the quick scattering of flowers. Commentators have difficulty explaining exactly what the feeling of the poet is, however, and their opinions color their opinion about what the word "scatter" means as applied to the poet (see above). Kubota(1937) saw aesthetics as the main focus of the poem, contrasting the elegant and aesthetically appropriate cherry blossoms with the inappropriate ugliness of human old age. This is in contrast to other scholars who see the final lines as literal, that the poet does not want others to see him in an old and decrepit state.

Seigi and Kaneko(1927) both assumed this poem must be tied to some specific incident in the poet's life, although (unless you accept Seigi 's authorship attribution) there is no way to know exactly what that might have been. There also does not seem to be any particularly good reason to avoid interpreting "scatter" as "die".

Takeoka pointed to the multiple -nu suffixes showing completion, and the rhythm of the poem itself along with the strong statement of decision, having a somewhat similar feel to the previous poem.

MYS 10.1855 is a precursor to this poem:

桜花時は過ぎねど見る人の恋ふる盛りと今し散るらむ

Finally, there is some question over the authorship of this poem. It appears in the poetry collection of Sosei and a few manuscripts and alternate sources of this poem also attribute it to Sosei. Keichū (Yozaishō) supported Sosei's authorship, assuming that there was no reason for Zōku's two poems to be separated and that someone must have accidentally written Zōku because of the similarity in prose preface between this poem and KKS 75. Seigi used a long note to show this poem was actually by a brother of Sosei's. But neither explanation is airtight, and the Sosei collection is a later compilation that may have drawn on sources already incorrectly attributing this poem to Sosei.
Roughly a quarter of the poems are from the Man'yōshū, and many others appear in the first three Imperial collections (especially the KKS and GSS). == Analysis ==

This poem moves to flowers that have already fallen, and the common comparison of white flowers and snow. The poem may have been placed here due to the mention of Henjō in the previous poem (see KKS 76 for discussion of the arrangement of the next three poems).

When the KKS includes specific information in the prose preface, it often raises the question of how relevant that information is to the interpretation of the poem itself. Many commenters say that the preface helps interpret the poem by calling on the well known cherry blossoms of Urin'in. Kubota is one of the few to push back on this, saying that the preface simply provides information about where the poet was, but that the poem itself is not particularly tied to the temple. (Kubota also took a very idiosyncratic reading of the poem that contrasted the "place of flowers" at the top of the tree which was spring, and the base of the tree which looked like winter due to the snow.)

Kubota also thought that the expression of the poem would have seemed fresh at the time, although the comparison later became stale. Miura(1943) agrees with this, but McCullough considers the expression "hackneyed."

SIS 64 is a similar poem by Tsurayuki. The 12th century poet Kenshō wrote a long note questioning why this poem was included in the KKS rather than Tsurayuki's own. He points to a previous treatise by Fujiwara no Kiyosuke (the Fukurozōshi), who pointed out first that both poems are included in Tsurayuki's later Shinsen waka. Kiyosuke's opinion was that Tsurayuki did not want to include too many of his own poems and so sometimes allowed in poems that were not as good as his own.

Analysis
The previous poem was calm and postured, comparing the blossoms to snow. Here, Sosei vents anger with a conversational style poem that contains two questioning sentences that break up the poem. The 13th century priest-poet Jakue noted that usually poets will subsume their identities into the poem, but the explicit use of ware (me) here highlights Sosei's anger.

Older commentaries commonly described the tone here as "childish" or "slight", referring to the idea that the wind might actually have a "lodging" that one can visit. More recent commentaries do not agree with this, seeing the personification of the wind as elegant and poetic. Rather than the "home" of the wind, the yadori is better seen as a temporary lodging where the wind, which blows here and there, stays. Sosei wants to find out where the wind is staying tonight.

In another difference of opinion on the tone, some commenters (such as Kaneko 1927) describe the feeling as crazed anger, especially as shown through the direct questions. Takeoka sees it rather as conversational and not particularly crazed.

McCullough praised the "wry humor" and the "originality of Sosei's conception," contrasting it to the poems that surround it. She used this as an example of this kind of arrangement in the KKS, also using Tsurayuki's poem 2 as an example. However, there are some doubts as to what the original arrangement of the poems was here, since different manuscripts place 76-78 in different orders.

Finally, Katagiri notes that this is the first poem of several which show anger at the wind for scattering the flowers.

The numbers in parentheses are numbers within the Hachidaisho.
:A place northwest of the Heian palace (now in the city proper). At one point Bishop Henjō lived here, and it seems likely that the author of this poem was associated with him although there is no certain information.
;Place of flowers
:The term hana no tokoro is somewhat unclear, but the majority opinion is that it means "This temple grounds which is famous for its cherry trees." Other opinions are "The place where flowers have fallen" (Mabuchi Uchigiki), "The tops of the trees that normally have flowers" (Kubota 1937), and "The broad, wide temple grounds with many flowering trees" (Seigi).

Analysis
